Why We Exist
To empower the next generation to think clearly and critically about what they believe and to take ownership of their faith. We do this not by outsourcing parents, but by resourcing them to disciple and transfer legacy to their children as they face life’s questions and challenges. We also support faith leaders in churches and schools by providing content and speakers who effectively address life’s toughest topics.
What We DoIf C.S. Lewis and MTV were combined, the result would be Axis. Why? Because we take the most compelling ideas (think Lewis, Chesterton, Keller, Luther, and Augustine) and translate those ideas into visual form without watering down the original meaning. We then deliver these ideas to a post-literate generation (think MTV, movies, music, television, and YouTube) using their style of communication. Axis is the intersection of ideas, media, and generations.
WHAT AXIS DO YOU REVOLVE AROUND?
Axis exists because of “The 3.” What is “The 3”? Well, that depends on who you ask. For David Eaton, the CEO and Cofounder of Axis, “The 3” are his high school friends Chris, Andrew, and Josh. During their high-school years, David went on several mission trips to Mexico with these 3 guys, and they all stood on the dusty street corner proclaiming the Gospel through an interpreter. After high school, they all went to college. Four or five years after graduating high school, all three of David’s friends were either atheist or agnostic. They had walked away from the God they proclaimed to the pedestrians of Mexico.
But if you ask Jeremiah Callihan, the CSO and Cofounder of Axis, who “The 3” are, he would say they are his sons Nehemiah, Elijah, and Jonathan. You see, Jeremiah is a good father, but he wants to be even better. He wants to know how to best raise his sons to know God, love Him, and pursue Him with everything they are. The bottom line is: Jeremiah wants to do the best he can to keep his 3 from becoming like David’s 3.
So Jeremiah and David started Axis to figure out why students were “leaving the faith” in college and to do something to stop it. Through the help of a wise mentor, David and Jeremiah figured out that students don’t actually lose their faith in college. Rather, college simply tests the quality of the faith they already have; for many, their “faith” never stood a chance.
Axis seeks to improve the quality of students’ faith so that when they face the tests of college, questions, doubts, and evil, they will find that they have a solid foundation on which to stand. Through 18+ hours of presentations that use examples from today’s pop culture, Axis works to challenge students to engage the world around them, to understand why they believe what they say they believe, and to make their faith their own. But they quickly came to the realization that Axis couldn’t achieve this alone, and that if we wanted to see lasting change in students’ lives, we needed parents to begin discipling their students after Axis left. Thus Axis became a creative cultural agency that acts a translator between students and parents so that they can understand one another and build effective relationships that allow them to grow closer to God and each other.
Because we send teams of young adults—not just one person, but four—to speak to students and parents all over the country, we are always in need of more translators! And we want to give you the opportunity to participate. By taking part in the Axis Internship, you will get firsthand experience speaking to all kinds of audiences about some of the biggest theological and philosophical ideas that exist. Don’t miss out on this unique experience!
